Barry Town Council in conjunction with Victorian Barry Experience will be holding free tours of Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery exploring the background and tragic consequences of the 1919 Barry Race Riots.
The free event will consist of a walking tour followed by refreshments in Merthyr Dyfan Chapel. Donations welcomed towards the Mayor’s chosen charities: Mind in the Vale and Valeways.
Over a hundred years ago, in 1919, Barry, along with other dock towns in Liverpool, Cardiff, and Newport witnessed race riots. These riots were driven by high unemployment, insecurity and a fear of foreigners, witnessed killings, mobs on the rampage, and a blind hatred for anyone of a different colour or creed.
