The History of Sound follows David and Lionel, two students at a 1916 New England boarding school who bond over their love of music. Together, they journey across America recording vanishing folk songs, preserving voices before they disappear. When the First World War intervenes, both men are drawn into battle, forever altering their relationship.
Based on Ben Shattuck's acclaimed novel, Oliver Hermanus's adaptation unfolds across decades, exploring love, loss, and the impulse to preserve what cannot be held. Through lyrical cinematography, the film becomes a tender meditation on memory and the spaces between silence and sound, absence and presence.
