May has arrived, and the Vale of Glamorgan is already buzzing with an exciting and diverse line-up of events.

From lively festivals and cultural celebrations to scenic walks and foodie favourites, something is happening in every corner of the Vale this month. Whether you’re looking to get outdoors, support local talent, or simply enjoy a great day out, here are some of the standout events you won’t want to miss.

Glastonbarry Fringe

Kicking the month off in style is the Glastonbarry Fringe Festival, a vibrant prelude to the much-loved summer tribute festival that happens throughout the month of May with a wide range of events. Designed to build excitement ahead of July, this series of events brings creativity and community spirit to the forefront.

On 1st May, Black Jam Circus take over Barry Island with a unique blend of performance, music and immersive entertainment, setting a lively tone for the days ahead. 

The following day, Saturday 2nd May, shines a spotlight on emerging talent with The Gig Ready Showcase, where young musicians get the chance to perform in front of a live audience. Later that evening, the Glastonbarry Juniors’ Search For A Star Final promises an inspiring display of youthful talent, as finalists compete for the top spot in what has become a highlight for local families and supporters.

Vale of Glamorgan Walking Festival

If you’re keen to get active and explore the Vale’s stunning landscapes, the Valeways Walking Festival runs from 5th to 10th May. This much-anticipated annual event offers a series of guided walks suitable for a range of abilities, making it accessible whether you’re a seasoned walker or just looking for a leisurely stroll.

This year’s theme focuses on the remarkable churches dotted across the Vale of Glamorgan. With 28 guided routes available, participants will have the opportunity to discover the rich history, fascinating architecture and untold stories behind these historic buildings. Along the way, walkers can also enjoy breathtaking coastal views, peaceful countryside paths and the welcoming atmosphere that makes this festival so popular year after year.

Penarth Operatic & Dramatic Society presents: We Will Rock You

Beginning on the 13th May is the latest production from PODS, We Will Rock You! Step into a futuristic world where individuality is crushed and music is controlled. Set 300 years in the future on the dystopian iPlanet, a society ruled by the all-powerful Globalsoft Corporation and the ruthless Killer Queen. Real music and musical instruments are banned and creativity is a thing of the past. But when a dreamer named Galileo begins hearing mysterious lyrics from a forgotten age, he teams up with the rebellious Scaramouche and a group of underground rebels known as the Bohemians. Barry Card and Collector Con

For fans of film, television and collectibles, Barry Card and Collector Con takes over the Memo Arts Centre on 16th and 17th May. This exciting event brings together collectors, enthusiasts and pop culture fans for a weekend packed with activities.

Visitors can meet a range of special guests from iconic TV shows and films, including Mat Horne, Colin Baker, and Chris Barrie, among many others. Alongside guest appearances, there will be stalls featuring trading cards, memorabilia and unique collectibles, as well as opportunities for autographs and photos. Day tickets are priced at £20, with weekend passes available for £30, making it a must-visit for fans and collectors alike.

Gŵyl Fach Y Fro

Also taking place on 16th May, Gwyl Fach Y Fro returns to Barry Island for another celebration of Welsh language, music and culture. This vibrant festival brings together performers, artists and the local community in a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

This year’s lineup includes acts such as Aleighcia Scott, alongside a mix of bands, schools and community performers. A new addition for this year is “Hafan Iolo”, a dedicated covered space offering talks, workshops and activities for both children and adults, making the festival even more inclusive and engaging. Whether you’re a fluent Welsh speaker or simply curious, this event offers a fantastic way to experience the culture and creativity of the region.

Barry Island 10K

If you’re looking for something more active, the Barry Island 10K takes place on 17th May and promises an energetic and uplifting day by the sea. This popular race features a fully closed-road 10km route, taking runners through some of the Vale’s most scenic spots, including Whitmore Bay, Romilly Park, the Knap and Watch House Bay.

Although the event has sold out once again, spectators are encouraged to come along and support the runners. The atmosphere is always electric, with crowds lining the route to cheer participants on, making it just as enjoyable to watch as it is to run.

Vale Food Trail

Food lovers are in for a treat as the Vale Food Trail returns from 24th May and continues into June. This event celebrates the very best of local produce, inviting residents and visitors to explore the region’s thriving food scene.

Through a range of exclusive events, tastings and experiences, the trail highlights the connection between local producers and the cafés, restaurants and businesses that champion their ingredients. It’s a fantastic opportunity to discover seasonal dishes, learn more about sustainable food practices and support local enterprises that are at the heart of the Vale’s community.

Cowbridge Food Festival

Rounding off the month, the Cowbridge Food Festival takes place on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th May, transforming the charming market town into a bustling hub of flavour and creativity.

Visitors can browse a wide variety of stalls offering everything from indulgent sweet treats to savoury delights, all produced by local makers and artisans. In addition, live cooking demonstrations at 96 Degrees Coffee House will give visitors the chance to see talented chefs in action, pick up new culinary tips and, of course, sample plenty of delicious food along the way. It’s a perfect day out for families, friends and anyone with a love of good food.

With such a rich mix of events on offer, May is shaping up to be an unforgettable month in the Vale of Glamorgan.
