Barry Town United Members Back New Ownership Model in Landmark Vote

Wednesday, 7 October 2026 09:40

By Nathan Spackman

Barry Town United AFC is set to enter a new era after members approved plans to transfer the club to a new ownership structure led by current chairman Mark Barrett and his family.

The proposals passed at an Extraordinary General Meeting on Tuesday evening, ending more than a decade of fan-led ownership and paving the way for what the club says will be a period of long-term investment, development and growth.

Since 2013, Barry Town United has operated as a fan-led, community-owned private limited company by guarantee without share capital. The club's ownership model was established after a supporter-led takeover and legal revival following a turbulent period marked by financial difficulties and challenges under previous private ownership.

Under the new arrangement, Mark Barrett and his family will take ownership of the club, with Barrett continuing in his role as chairman.

Barrett has been heavily involved with Barry Town United for the past 13 years, contributing significant personal time, financial support and leadership during a period that has seen the club rebuild both on and off the pitch.

Club officials say the new structure will provide a platform for responsible investment while retaining the identity, heritage and community values that have defined Barry Town United throughout its history.

The club currently supports around 950 registered players through its various teams and development pathways, and says its commitment to grassroots football, youth development and community initiatives across Barry will remain unchanged.

The move could also lead to closer ties between different parts of the club. While Barry Town United's women's section currently operates independently, discussions are expected to begin on creating a more unified structure encompassing all sections of the club.

According to the club, the ownership change is intended to strengthen football operations, commercial activity, facilities and community engagement, while ensuring long-term sustainability.

In a statement following the vote, Mark Barrett said, "Last night marked an important moment in the history of Barry Town United.

"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to engage with the proposals and to the members for placing their trust in the future direction we have outlined.

"This is about creating a sustainable foundation for Barry Town United to grow, while protecting the identity, history and community values that make this club so important to so many people.

"There is a lot of work still to do, but we are excited about what the future can bring. Our ambition is clear: to build a stronger, sustainable Barry Town United that our town, our supporters and future generations can be proud of."

The club says work will now begin to implement the new ownership structure and put the necessary arrangements in place, while thanking members, supporters, volunteers, staff, players and coaches for their continued support.
