Community-run libraries across the Vale of Glamorgan are celebrating 10 years since local volunteers took over their management, with facilities continuing to serve as important hubs for residents across the county.
Five libraries in Wenvoe, Dinas Powys, Rhoose, St Athan, and Sully and Lavernock have now completed a decade of community-led operation after responsibility for their day-to-day running was transferred from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
While volunteers oversee the libraries, they continue to be supported by the council as part of the wider Vale library service, helping to maintain access to library resources while allowing each facility to retain its local identity.
Over the past ten years, the libraries have evolved into multi-purpose community spaces, offering opportunities for residents to learn, meet others, participate in activities and access local services.
Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language, Cllr Rhiannon Birch, praised the contribution of volunteers who have helped keep the facilities thriving.
She said the continued success of the libraries demonstrated what could be achieved when communities and the council worked together, adding that the authority remained committed to providing professional support and access to the wider library network.
The impact of the community library model has been particularly noticeable in Sully, where library usage increased by 29 per cent between 2016 and 2025.
Volunteer and trustee Rhian Thomas said residents had been determined to keep Sully Library open when the changes were first proposed.
"The day-to-day running of the library is now down to a team of volunteers, and they're a great team," she said.
She added that community libraries were often predicted to struggle after a few years, making the achievement of all five Vale libraries reaching their tenth anniversary a significant milestone.
A series of celebrations have been held throughout the year to mark the anniversary.
Sully and Lavernock Community Library hosted an open day featuring a free book stall, refreshments and a raffle, while St Athan Community Hub and Library organised a barn dance at the Paul Lewis Community Centre.
In Rhoose, volunteers, supporters and residents gathered to celebrate the library's contribution to the community. The event featured local authors Chris Lloyd, Brenda Despontin and Graham Loveluck-Edwards, while Rhoose Local Vocals choir provided entertainment.
During the celebrations, Rhoose Community Library and Activity Centre was presented with a High Sheriff's Award by the High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, Jane John, in recognition of its work in the community.
Meanwhile, Wenvoe Community Library marked the occasion as part of Wenvoe Community Council's Community Engagement Day on 3 October, which included community stalls, a barbecue and live entertainment.
The community library model was introduced in the Vale of Glamorgan following efforts to protect local library provision while facing financial pressures. Ten years on, supporters say the success of the libraries demonstrates the value of local volunteers in sustaining services at the heart of their communities.
Today, the five libraries continue to serve as welcoming spaces for residents of all ages, providing access not only to books but also community activities, support services and social connections.
