Body found in search for missing kayaker Michael Henry

Monday, 3 August 2026 18:41

The body of a missing 19-year-old kayaker has been found off Northumberland.

Michael Henry was reportedly in a two-person boat when it capsized near Boulmer on the evening of 7 July.

The other man swam to a buoy and was picked up by coastguard, but despite a days-long search, rescuers couldn't find Mr Henry.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed his body was located off the Blyth coast on 26 July.

It has been formally identified, and a report has been sent to the coroner.

Mr Henry's family said he was a "keen sportsman who loved the outdoors" and a "much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend".

They said the teenager - from the Rothbury area - was preparing to go travelling this summer and hoping to go to university the next academic year.

Thanking emergency services, they added: "Michael will be forever in our thoughts, and we will miss him."
