Charlton Athletic fan dies and match abandoned after medical emergency at ground

A Charlton Athletic fan died after a medical emergency at their ground, the football club have said.

The side's EFL Championship match against Portsmouth at The Valley, a lunchtime kick-off, was halted in the 12th minute while the supporter initially received treatment, and was subsequently postponed. The score was 0-0.

In a statement, Charlton Athletic said it was "devastated", and thanked the staff and first responders who did everything they could during the incident.

"The club are grateful to supporters in attendance and the Portsmouth players and staff for their patience and understanding as this tragedy unfolded.

"Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."

Charlton Athletic captain Greg Docherty paid tribute to the fan on X: "Absolutely devastating news… from all of the players at the club our thoughts are with his family and friends through this extremely difficult time," followed by a broken heart emoji.

Both clubs said information on when the match would be rescheduled will be announced in due course.

Portsmouth also paid tribute on its website, saying it was also "devastated".

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends at this difficult time," said Portsmouth in a statement on their website.

The EFL posted on X: "Our deepest condolences go out to the supporter's family, friends and all @CAFCofficial at this incredibly difficult time," followed by a love heart emoji.
