Choir Brings Grandeur and Passion to Barry Arts Festival

The Elizabeth Singers performed an hour long concert of nineteenth century German music at their recent Barry Arts Festival concert in St Mary’s Church, Barry.

The programme focused on ‘Geistliche Chormusik’, a tradition of Sacred Choir Music with its roots in German composers, such as seventeenth century works from Schutz and later compositions from Bruckner, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

The Cardiff-based choir performed songs in both Latin and German, with accompaniment from organist Aaron Shilson, of Llandaff Cathedral.

Barry Arts Festival organiser, Dot Connell, who also joined the performers on stage, said “This was a great opportunity to hear music of this grandeur and passion performed live in Barry.

“From sweeping grandeur to trance-like stillness, it was a joy to see it and hear it in the wonderful setting of St Mary’s Church.

“Year on year, Barry Arts Festival is growing the audience for arts entertainment in Barry.

“People trust that we deliver a diverse programme that not only has broad appeal, but also offers more niche events.

“So far this year we have presented international jazz, Americana rock’n’roll, Welsh language theatre, screening of an independent film about Barry,  and a chamber choir performance of classical music. 

“We would like to thank Barry Town Council for their sponsorship of the Arts Festival this year through their Vibrant Culture Grant, and were pleased to welcome Mayor Sian Thomas to the concert.”
