Community cinema brings year‑round films to the rural Vale thanks to Lottery funding

A volunteer‑run pop‑up cinema in Llantwit Major is set to bring films to rural audiences all year round, after securing support from The National Lottery Community Fund.

The Community Cinema, based at Llantonian Hall, has been running monthly screenings since last December.

Organisers say the funding means residents across the rural Vale can now rely on a regular programme of affordable films without travelling to larger towns or cities.

The cinema will show titles throughout 2026, 2027 and 2028, with the first slate of films announced for this autumn being a secreening of Hamnet on Saturday 26th September.

Screenings take place on the last Saturday of each month, with tickets priced at £2.50 for adults and £1 for under‑18s, including hot drinks and popcorn.

More in Common Llantwit Major, the volunteer group coordinating the project, says the aim is to make film accessible for everyone in the Vale, particularly those living in rural areas where cultural venues are limited.

Inspired by the late humanitarian Jo Cox, the group has built the cinema into a monthly community fixture, offering low‑cost entertainment and a social space for residents of all ages.

Autumn programme

• Hamnet – Sat 26 September, 7pm The award‑winning adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.

• Halloween Double Bill – Sat 25 October Wicked For Good at 3pm, followed by The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 7pm. Fancy dress encouraged.

• Finding Your Feet – Sat 28 November, 7pm A British rom‑com featuring Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley.

• It’s A Wonderful Life – Sat 12 December, 7pm The Christmas classic starring James Stewart and Donna Reed.

Tickets are available online via Eventbrite, in person at Bardic Books and Nickelby’s Books in Llantwit Major, and on the door, subject to availability.
