Peter Kay show bomb hoax suspect removed from court after outbursts during hearing

A man charged with false communications over an alleged bomb hoax at a Peter Kay show has been removed from court after repeatedly talking during a hearing on Monday.

Omar Majed, 19, was ordered to go down to the cells part-way through an 11-minute proceeding at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.

Thousands of fans had to leave Birmingham's Utilita Arena and Kay, 52, was ushered off stage about 45 minutes into the performance, after the teenager allegedly "barged" his way into the venue without a ticket on Friday evening, the court heard.

Majed indicated to a police constable and others that a bomb may have been left at the venue, prosecutor Ros Buttler said.

She said the alleged hoax had "serious repercussions", as around 13,000 people were expected at the gig, which was cancelled.

Footage from Friday night shows crowds filing out of the arena, which can seat 15,800 spectators.

Majed, of Saltley, Birmingham, was charged with allegedly making false communications that a bomb was present in the arena.

After confirming his address and date of birth at the start of the hearing, Majed was repeatedly asked to be quiet by District Judge Michelle Smith, who was appearing in court via a video-link.

District Judge Smith also made several requests for Majed to sit down.

After Majed shouted that proposed bail conditions for him were "not acceptable", he was taken down to the cells before the end of the hearing.

He did not make a plea to the single charge of communicating false information to police and was refused bail.

The judge said she was "satisfied that the case should be dealt with in the crown court" in June.

West Midlands Police said "nothing suspicious was found" during searches after "a report of a suspicious bag being left in the area".

The show was part of Kay's Better Late Than Never national tour, which will see all proceeds donated to 12 cancer charities.
