Vale success at the Urdd Eisteddfod

Urdd Gobaith Cymru

Young talent from the Vale have been competing at this year's Urdd National Eisteddfod.

Around 90,000 visitors are expected at Europe's biggest youth festival, which is taking place this year at Margam Park, near Port Talbot.

Pupils from Ysgol Bro Morgannwg enjoyed another successful year with four wins in the Pavilion stage competitions, including three on Friday.

Bank Holiday Monday saw Clwb Curig from Ysgol Sant Curig took first place in the band / solo artist competition while Nia Carerra from Ysgol Sant Baruc won first prize for her guitar solo.

On Wednesday, Deryn-Bach Allen-Dyer was third in the Bobi Jones Medal for young adults learning Welsh - the former Commonwealth judo champion also came third in the same competition last year.

Ahead of the festival's start, the results of the arts and homework competitons were announced - with first prizes for children from Ysgol Pen-y-Garth in Penarth and Ysgol Bro Morgannwg in Barry.

Organisers said over 119,000 registrations had been received for this year's festival - with over 13,000 coming from the host area and a 42% increase in young Welsh learners taking part compared to last year.

Over 400 different competitions took place on the Maes during the six-day event.

Llio Maddocks, director of arts at Urdd Gobaith Cymru, said: "The number of entries this year reflects the way Eisteddfod yr Urdd has evolved and grown to ensure a wide range of opportunities are available to children and young people through the medium of Welsh."

"It’s a pleasure to see that the area with the highest number of competitors this year is our host region, West Glamorgan."

Next year's Urdd National Eisteddfod will be held on the Mona showground on Anglesey - with organisers announcing plans to extend the festival to a full week.

Traditionally held during the May half-term holidays, compettion would get underway on Saturday - a day after schools break up and continue right through to Friday with the Gwyl Triban music festival moved to the opening weekend.

The Urdd says it will consult its members, local branches and committees in the coming months before a final decision is reached in the autumn, when the list of competitions is published.
