Barry Rugby Football Club has put forward a proposal to relocate a Public Right of Way across the Reservoir Fields following feedback from local residents during a recent community consultation event.
The club has been working with the Vale of Glamorgan Council Countryside Access team to develop a potential new route that would maintain public access across the fields while addressing safety concerns raised by residents living close to the club.
The proposed diversion would create a walking route connecting Hardy Close to Pendine Close, preserving a popular path used by walkers and dog walkers while moving the route away from the club’s main entrance, clubhouse and car park.
During the consultation process, residents highlighted the importance of maintaining access across the fields but also raised concerns about anti-social behaviour around the club’s entrance and car park area.
By relocating the Public Right of Way slightly further from this area, the proposal aims to:
• Maintain access across the Reservoir Fields for walkers and dog walkers
• Improve safety and security for nearby residents
• Reduce anti-social behaviour around the car park area
• Allow better management of the club’s entrance and facilities
The proposed change would also support the club’s longer-term plans to improve community sports facilities at Barry RFC, including the development of a new all-weather 3G pitch.
Dan Maggs, Head of Partnerships, Barry RFC said: "The feedback we received from residents at our consultation event was very clear. People want to keep access to the fields, but there are also genuine concerns about safety around the club entrance and car park area.
This proposal aims to strike the right balance by protecting access for walkers while also improving safety and allowing the club to better manage the area in the future."
The Vale of Glamorgan Council will now begin the formal consultation process for the proposed diversion of the Public Right of Way. This will give residents the opportunity to review the proposal and submit feedback.
Barry RFC says it will continue working with the council and local residents to ensure the final outcome benefits both the community and the club.
Further updates will be shared as the consultation progresses.
