Gilfach Goch 31 Dinas Powys RFC 52
Dinas Powys ran in 21 unanswered points in the second half to clinch a vital victory in this must-win match at bottom-of-the-table Gilfach Goch, scoring eight tries in all to improve their survival prospects as they battle against relegation.
They got off to a flying start, winning lineout ball and setting up Iwan Davies to go in under the posts. This was quickly followed by a backs move which put in Brett Jewel after 10 minutes, and shortly after Tom Stout scored out wide.
Gilfach then worked their big pack up the pitch to sneak a close-range try, but Dinas responded straight from the restart, with a run from Tyler Reinholdt putting Jewel in for his second, giving them a 24-5 lead.
But the Dinas pack switched off, allowing Gilfach to hit back with two close-range tries to close the gap. Dinas responded, great support play putting Rhys Jones in, but a yo-yo first half ended with Gilfach scoring again to make it 31-31 at the interval.
After a reminder of what was on the line, straight off the bat Dinas took the lead again, Davies kicking ahead and getting to the line first to bag his second try. More phase play from Dinas saw Reinholdt running from his own 22 and outpacing the Gilfach back line to score in in the corner.
Soon after another break from man-of-the-match Reinholdt, and great inside support, put in Caelan Hurley to wrap up a crucial victory.
Head coach John Dimond continues to give his promising group of young players game time, with Toby Price and Rauley Hunter making positive first team debuts.
Dinas Powys: tries - Brett Jewel 2, Iwan Davies 2, Tyler Reinholdt, Tim Stout, Caelan Hurley, Rhys Jones; conv - Hurley 6.
