One of Barry’s longest‑standing grassroots football clubs has announced ambitious plans to secure the future of its home ground, as Island Marine FC begins the process of taking over the lease and licence for Maslin Park.
The club — founded in 1993 and now home to 18 teams ranging from Under 5s to senior squads — has been run entirely by volunteers for more than 30 years. Generations of local families have played, coached and supported at Maslin Park, which has served as the club’s base since its earliest days.
Island Marine FC says taking on the lease is a crucial step that will finally allow long‑needed improvements to go ahead. Planned upgrades include essential pitch works, refurbished changing rooms, a new pitch barrier with removable dugouts, and a secure storage container for equipment.
Club representatives say the changes will transform the matchday experience and ensure the club can continue to grow, offering a safe and welcoming environment for players of all ages.
To kick‑start fundraising efforts, the club’s two Under‑13 teams have set themselves a remarkable challenge: collectively running 3,300 kilometres between now and 1 September — 100 kilometres for every year Island Marine FC has existed.
Their goal is to raise £3,300 towards the club’s wider £20,000 fundraising target.
Coaches say the challenge reflects everything the club stands for: teamwork, commitment, community spirit and pride in the badge. The young players’ determination, they add, is a reminder of why improving facilities matters not just for today’s squads, but for the generations who will follow.
Island Marine FC describes itself as a club built on community values, with volunteers at its heart. Leaders say the improvements at Maslin Park will help secure a lasting legacy for future teams, families and supporters.
The club is now appealing to the local community to help reach its £20,000 target. “Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference,” the club said. “With your support, we can build a better, stronger home for everyone who loves and believes in what Island Marine stands for.”
