Barry Town United have signed former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Josh Bernard.

The 19 year-old, originally from Penarth, became a free agent after leaving the League One club at the end of last season.

He was an unused substitute in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Colwyn Bay at Jenner Park - Barry's first home game of the Cymru Premier campaign.

Bernard, who emerged through the youth ranks at Argyle, signed his first professional contract with Argyle last summer after winning the league title with the under 18s squad.

He was sent out on loan at Southern League clubs Tiverton Town and AFC Mousehole before departing Home Park after Championship relegation.

On his return to the Vale, Bernard said: "I’m really excited to get going. Barry’s a proper football club with big ambition, and the chance to be part of that was too good to turn down. I’ll give 100% every game, that’s the only way I know how to play."

Barry's head of football Steve Jenkins, said he believed Bernard will be a 'big influence'.

"Joshua’s got that mix of energy and grit that every side needs. He covers every blade of grass, he’s competitive, and he’s a great character. He’ll add a lot to our midfield and to the squad as a whole."

Bernard could make his Barry debut in their Bank Holiday double-header, which sees them entertain Penybont on Friday night before by a short trip to face Cardiff Met next Monday.
