The producers of a new opera exploring the links between Wales and Trinidad have attracted over 100,000 views on TikTok.

An Act of Piracy, which opened at the Penarth Pier Pavilion last weekend, mixes calypso and classical British sea songs to tell the story of a West Wales who was kidnapped by pirates at the end of the 18th century.

To promote the production, Welsh social media guru Wyn Williams - also known as @dailingual - called at the home of singer Richard Parry just outside Cardiff.

His clip explores familiar place names in Trinidad and Tobago such as Pembroke, Glamorgan and Bethel as well as how people in Wales were directly involved in the economic development of Trinidad, based upon a brutal slave economy.

Richard, who created the opera said: "I told the story and Wyn suggested we make a short video. It's lovely that so many people have now seen it."

"I've never been on a TikTok video before so it's a bit of a surreal experience to find tens of thousands of people around the world listening to the story. Plenty of people in Trinidad have been watching it and sharing it."

Following Britain's invasion in 1797, Pembrokeshire-born Thomas Picton was installed as Trinidad's first brutal governor.

"I didn't say in the TikTok video that Thomas...although found guilty, was never sentenced", said Richard. "Picton's story is such a disgrace. And these important things are just the tip of a truly, truly terrible vile iceberg."

"I also wish I'd said the Wales is shaped like Trinidad, not Trinidad like Wales! But anyway I hope it's sending people to their maps and their history blogs!"

As a result of the clip, TikTok viewers have been asking the creators about possible connections between Welsh and Trinidadian accents.

So in response, Richard filmed a reherasal for the opera and recorded a clip with lead actress Mary-Anne Roberts, who talks about her first experience of arriving in London from Trinidad and how Welsh accents may be related.

"The overwhelming number of comments on the popular TikTok video about the map of Trinidad  have been positive," said Richard, "but a few people have asked what a white guy is doing telling the story of Trinidad!"

"Obviously, this is only a few seconds of video taken in my front room, but our opera is a carefully crafted show exploring the attitudes in Britain that allowed such vile brutal ventures across the world, and begins to address the hiddenness of the African and Trinidadian voices and stories."

"Mary-Anne's calypso and Trinidadian folk song is the deep ground of the opera."

An Act of Piracy was sold out for its premiere in Penarth last Saturday night where audiences were invited to dress up as a pirate.

The production, which includes a full calypso band, moves to the Grange Pavilion at Grangetown in Cardiff on Saturday night at 7pm. Tickets are available on the opera's website.
