Seven members of Barry Athletic Bowls Club will be going for glory as they compete for five titles at the Welsh national championships at Llandrindod Wells in August.

One member - Russell Harris - will be going for a hattrick as he competes in the open singles, as well as partnering Nicola Clarke-Squires in the mixed pairs and Paul Swannick in the open pairs.

For Clarke-Squires and Swanwick, this will be their first appearance in the national finals.

The club’s other South Vale area winners are Jack Killin, who competes in the under-25 singles, and the senior triples team of Scott Howell, Dave Townsend and Peter Rogers.

Harris is looking forward to a potentially busy week at Llandrindod, with the competitions running from Monday 11th to Saturday 16th August.

“I don’t know the schedule yet, but I hope to be very busy. It’s the quarter-final of the Mixed Pairs, and the last 16 in the others. Matches will have to be scheduled to avoid possible clashes.”

For Harris, who has been playing for ten years, the three South Vale titles he holds mean he has swept the board in the area competition, having previously won the Two Wood, Triples and Fours.

“Now that I’ve won these three I’ve won all six competitions in South Vale. I’m very happy with that achievement.”

Six of the seven players chasing national titles will be in action at the Vale of Glamorgan Bowls Association County Finals at Maesteg at the weekend, with Chris Whately joining them when he bids in the Two Wood Singles title next Sunday.

“I rarely enter county competitions,” said Whately. “I entered the Two Wood because I lead for the club and thought it would give me more experience. I wasn’t expecting to win the South Vale title. There were some tough games. It was good experience and I’m looking forward to Maesteg.”

On Friday, the senior triples team of Howell, Townsend and Rogers defend their county title and Killin is in action in the Under-25 singles final.

On Sunday, Harris bids for double success as he partners Swannick in the open pairs final in the morning, and contests the open singles final in the afternoon.
