Barry RFC 45 Cambrian Welfare 12
After the disappointing display at Abercwmboi seven days earlier, on Saturday Barry produced the positive flowing rugby the coaching group know the players are capable of.
This was the Bombers at their best. Seven tries in a sparkling display of fast-paced rugby and a bonus point secured before the interval as Cambrian Welfare, expected to prove a tough test, were simply swept aside.
On the front foot from the start, and taking the lead after just three minutes, the Bombers kept Cambrian pinned back in their own half for much of the first period, some incisive running and intelligent kicking making the pressure almost constant.
Barry, as coach Tomos Perry said after the match, had “a lot of points to prove. We were disappointed last week because the standard wasn’t what we expected from the boys. We get frustrated as coaches because we know the level they can play at.
“Cambrian are no easy opposition. I’ve been playing them for years, and when we’ve beaten them it was always by one or two points,” he said. “We knew it would be a tough team to bounce back against, but the boys even surprised me. I wasn’t expecting that many points against Cambrian.”
Barry made a few changes from the previous week, some enforced. “It was just to shake things up a bit,” said Perry, “let people know their position’s not safe, and if you have a poor game you’re not guaranteed to play next week. Division 1 rugby isn’t it.”
Barry were dominant in the scrums and at the breakdown, recycled quickly, and swift to move the ball through hands. They were well on top for most of the first hour, and defensively generally excellent when Cambrian enjoyed brief spells of pressure in the second half.
The pick of Barry’s tries was their second, a superb individual effort in the tenth minute, Morgan Prosser chipping the ball over defenders, running through to catch it, and then racing in behind the posts. Sheer quality, and the best among an excellent and varied set of team tries.
Barry: tries – Jack Long 2 (7 min, 31), Morgan Prosser (10), Evan Prosser (25), Dylan Thomas (42), Will Lewis (60), Victor Corrihons (62); conv – Morgan Prosser 5.
Cambrian Welfare: tries – Matthew Llewellyn (55), Jarrad Davies (80); conv – Llewellyn.
