Barry took the opportunity to give squad players some game time and rest others with niggles, by arranging a friendly to keep their early-season momentum going after their Cardiff Rugby South League visit to Llandaff was postponed because of a cup clash.
From the off, Barry showed intent and their early attack was rewarded, with the help of a fortuitous bounce from a chip and chase, Tom Provis touching down and then adding the extras.
Barry continued to push, and minutes later, a well-executed backs move resulted in hard-running centre George Strong crashing over after handing off the last defender, Provis again converting.
Barry’s backs continued to click, and with Morgan Beasley and Cam Hughes pulling the strings at nine and 10 Provis was rewarded with his second try in the corner for a 19-0 lead.
The one way-traffic was briefly halted late in the first half, Maesteg working hard for their first try before Provis went over for his third try, which he converted for a half-time score of 26-5.
Maesteg rang the changes, which had an immediate impact as they scored early to close the gap, before a fourth try for man-of-the-match Provis restored Barry’s advantage.
Maesteg’s third try caused a few nerves among the Barry fans, but these were quickly settled after several powerful carries by Barry’s hard-working pack, typified by stand-in captain Mav Jennings, were rewarded when back rower Max O’Sullivan, hooker for the day, crashed over to restore a three-score advantage.
The visitors grabbed a fourth, but Barry sealed an impressive victory with the final score going to powerful No. 8 Riley Hawkins.
Head coach Peter O’Sullivan said he and the other coaches were “more than happy with the effort and the result, considering all the changes and, apart from a few missed one-on-one tackles, couldn’t have asked for much more of the players.
The team have no game this week, but start their defence of the WRU National Youth Plate on October 25 when they host Rhiwbina in the first round.
