Barry Town United kicked off the new Cymru Premier campaign with a 2-0 win over newly promoted Llanelli on Friday night.

Steve Jenkins' men arrived at Stebonheath Park for the Gary Lloyd Cup, aiming to build on last weekend's league cup win - with the returning George Ratcliffe in goal and Keston Davies handed his club debut.

Llanelli - returning to the Welsh top flight after six years - have signed three ex-Barry players with both keeper Mike Lewis and defender Harrison Bright making their first league starts in red,

Davies went close to making an immediate impact early on when his shot from distance narrowly went wide, while both Ratcliffe and Lewis made fine saves to deny from close range.

But Ben Margetson broke the deadlock with the first goal of the Cymru Premier season on 17 minutes, heading home from Owen Cuddihy's well taken corner,

Barry grew to make the first half their own with Ollie Hulbert twice clearing the crossbar, before Ieuan Owen doubled the lead on the stroke of half time with a low drive from Robbie Wilmott's cross to beat Lewis.

The second half was a relatively muted affair with Ryan Kavanagh's early effort from a Hulbert pass sailing wide of the net, while Llanelli's nearest effort saw Danny Williams slot the ball wide from Tristan Jenkins' cross.

The closing stages did yield a superb save from Lewis to block a close range header from Owen, but Barry had done enough for their first three points of the season.

The two sides will meet again at Jenner Park in the third round of the Nathaniel MG Cup next month.

In the meantime, Barry turn their more immediate attention to a home clash with Colwyn Bay next Saturday lunchtime (12.30pm ko).

Elsewhere, reigning champions The New Saints suffered a shock 3-0 defeat at the hands of Briton Ferry Llansawel.

Former Llantwit Major striker Tom Walters was among the scorers at Park Hall - with a result that puts added pressure on TNS boss Craig Harrison following their early exit from European competition this summer.

Cardiff Met squandered a two-goal lead at home to Caernarfon. CJ Craven's penalty and a stunning Ryan Reynolds strike had put the Archers in control, before Matty Jones and sub Darren Thomas earned a dramatic 2-2 draw for the Cofis.

And ten-man Penybont won 1-0 at Haverfordwest County - James Crole was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident early in the second half, before a Mael Davies setpiece clinched all three points for Rhys Griffiths' side.

JD Cymru Premier results

Colwyn Bay 1-1 Connah's Quay Nomads
