The FAW has launched a review into the future of the Adran Premier, the top flight of women's football in Wales.
The leagues will get its first ever bespoke strategy next year as the governing body aims to build on Wales' major tournament debut at the Women's Euros in Switzerland.
Currently, there are eight teams, including Barry Town United, who have played at the top level since the league was relaunched in 2021.
Portas, a consultantcy firm, has been hired to lead the review, which will focus on the quality of the Adran Premier, engagement with fans and local communities and the commercial landscape.
Bethan Woolley, the FAW's strategic lead for women and girls' football, said: "The review of the Adran Premier comes at a pivotal moment for Welsh women's football."
"While we are witnessing growth across a number of areas within the women's game in Wales, it is essential to ensure the continued development of the full pathway."
"We are excited to share the vision of announcing an Adran Premier strategy in 2026, with the aim to strengthen and elevate the domestic game in Wales."
Wales' Euros debut saw Rhian Wilkinson's side exit at the group stages after three defeats against the Netherlands, France and England.
As such, the Adran Leagues were not represented at the tournament, with Gwalia United goalkeepe Laura O'Sullivan Jones missing out due to an ACL injury.
Jack Sharp, the FAW's head of domestic leagues, added: “The UEFA Women’s EURO has been a once in a generation catalyst for the development of women’s and girls’ football in Wales."
"Our continued investment in the Adran Premier to carve out a long term vision for the league stands as a central pillar to the legacy of Cymru competing out in Switzerland this summer."
"It is vital that talented footballers in Wales can see a clear and sustainable pathway to a career within our domestic game through the next phase of growth for the league.”
