The qualifying stages of the FAW Amateur Trophy kicked off with Ely Rangers beating St Athan on penalties following a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
The first round Vale derby saw Harvey Edwards put the Wenvoe club ahead after ten minutes, only for Kieran Ashton to equalise five minutes.
St Athan went ahead via Sean Nash three minutes after the break before a last-minute penalty for Zac Cleary led to a shoot-out, which Rangers went onto win 4-3 to progress.
Meanwhile, fresh off their early Welsh Cup exit, Cardiff Airport also fell at the first hurdle in the Trophy.
Curtis Scott Dabusco put them ahead at Penrhiwceiber Rangers, before Jack Thomas equalised for the hosts early in the second half.
A marathon penalty shoot out followed the 1-1 draw, with Rangers eventually prevailing 11-10.
Cogan Coronation played out a goalless draw with St Mellons in their first qualifying round tie, before succumbing 5-4 on penalties with keeper Sam Derrett making a decisive save from Leigh Bennett's spot kick.
Elsewhere, ten-man Cardiff Bay went down 4-2 to Aberdare Town - with Andrew Gardner keeping things level for the hosts by half time, before Aberdare ran riot with new signing Willbrainer Rodrigues de Sousa scoring a hattrick.
Sasha Canning replied late on for the Bay, who had Gardner sent off in stoppage time for two yellow cards.
Cardiff Bay Warriors fared no better with a 4-1 defeat to New Inn - Adam Sharif Badedi scored a consolation goal after the visitors raced ahead via Ben Williams, Anthony Richards, Brad Baker and Ethan Preston-Watkins.
