Keenan Patten is facing a lengthy injury lay-off at Newport County after suffering a broken leg in pre-season action.
The former Barry Town United midfielder, who joined the Exiles in February, needed surgery following a collision during Tuesday night's friendly at Bristol City.
Patten was released from hospital on Thursday, but the club says it's "too early to provide a clear timeline for his return".
County manager David Hughes said: "Thankfully, the injury wasn’t as bad as we initially feared at that particular moment in time, but we’ll be there to support him through his rehabilitation and we’re already looking forward to seeing him back on the grass."
Patten, a former Wales Under 19s international, made six first-team appearances for County during the latter stages of last season.
He scored ten goals for Barry, including a brace in his final appearance against Flint Town United, before moving to Rodney Parade on an 18 month contract.
A club spokesperson said: "Everyone at Newport County sends their best wishes to Keenan as he begins his recovery journey. He has the full support of the club during this difficult time."
"We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the paramedics and medical staff at the Robins High Performance Centre for their swift and professional assistance."
Both Barry Town and Newport County wrap up their pre-season preparations on Friday night when a youthful Exiles XI visits Jenner Park for a friendly (7.30 ko).
Barry kick off their campaign next weekend with a second round clash at home to Aberystwyth in the Nathaniel MG Cup, while County start their League Two campaign at home to Notts County.
