Police and Cardiff City launch operation to tackle matchday anti-social behaviour

By Nathan Spackman

South Wales Police and Cardiff City FC have launched a joint operation aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour linked to matchdays.

Operation Goal will focus on identifying people involved in incidents and taking appropriate action, ranging from education and diversionary work to Football Banning Orders.

Police say recent incidents have involved groups of young people, with anti-social behaviour reported outside Cardiff City Stadium, in surrounding areas and in the city centre before and after home matches.

Examples highlighted by police include mask-wearing, intimidation involving large groups, items being thrown and underage drinking.

Superintendent Emma Fox, from South Wales Police, said: “The Cardiff City Stadium provides a safe, welcoming, and family-friendly environment, and most people who attend matches behave responsibly.

“However, we have seen recent incidents of anti-social behaviour, often involving groups of young people.

“Incidents have been outside the stadium and surrounding areas, including the city centre, before and after home games.

“Operation Goal is a partnership approach designed to engage specifically with these young supporters, ensure their welfare, and put a stop to this behaviour.”

South Wales Police and Cardiff City FC say incidents will be reviewed and those involved identified, with the response depending on the individual circumstances.

Measures could include advice and warnings for individuals and families, referrals to support or diversionary programmes, legal action where criminal offences have been committed, the withdrawal of matchday tickets and restrictions on attending away fixtures.

Football Banning Orders could also be pursued.

A Cardiff City FC spokesperson said: “We want supporters of all ages to enjoy our matches in a safe, welcoming, and positive environment.

“To help achieve this, we are working with South Wales Police to address incidents of anti-social behaviour linked to matchdays.

“As always, we ask supporters to treat fellow fans, staff, residents and businesses with respect, follow the guidance of police, stewards and event staff, speak up if you witness behaviour that causes concern and help create a positive atmosphere that reflects the values of CCFC.”
