Sully Sports kicked off their Division Six campaign in the Admrial League with a 59-7 win over Whitchurch.
The hosts ran in eight tries, including a hat-trick from Ellis O’Grady, as their new-look team got the season off to a confidence-boosting start, although head coach John Dimond has said he expects tougher tests in future fixtures.
“It took us about 20 minutes to work them out,” said Dimond. “We worked out we could compete with them up front, and if we moved the ball quickly we could pull them apart. But some of the sides we play will probably be a little more resilient.”
Dimond had 28 players to select from, including several he had previously coached at youth level at Barry, to start a season he describes as something of a learning curve.
“The first season is a bit of a taster. Small steps and no pressure. Every game we are going to learn more things, and slowly but surely they’ll find their feet.”
Sully have struggled in the past, but curiosity about the new-look team attracted a healthy attendance. “It was a really positive day, and the more people realise it’s not the Sully of old, we may get a bit more interest,” said Dimond, both from players and spectators.
