A regeneration plan worth £20 million has been submitted to the UK Government.
The plan, which has been shaped by local people, is expected to unlock 10 years' worth of investment into Barry.
Over the last 18 months, residents' views about their town and what could be improved have been collated, and together with public survey results and data provided by the UK Government, have helped to develop the Plan for Barry.
Guided by groups of residents, business owners, and public servants, with input from hundreds of local people, the Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods will prioritise a vibrant town centre, safety and security in Barry, address the east-west divide, prioritise young people, and focus resources on areas with the most need.
The Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods Board will seek to work with a range of partners to deliver improvements and invest in projects that will deliver better health and employment outcomes for residents.
The Chair of the Barry Plan for Neighbourhoods, David Stevens, local resident and former CEO of Admiral Group, said, “We issued a call-out in August for volunteers to join thematic action groups to make a long-term, positive difference to the town, and the people of Barry did not disappoint."
“The Regeneration Plan reflects the creative and practical ideas that arose from the groups and reflects their own experience of life in Barry.
The Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Councillor Lis Burnett, said, “This is a plan that has been developed by the people of Barry, for the people of Barry. It is built on collaboration, shared ideas, and a commitment to working together for the future of the town.”
The Member of Parliament for the Vale of Glamorgan, Kanishka Narayan M,P said, “Barry’s future will be built by the people who know it best. This plan reflects their hopes for a stronger town centre, safer streets, better opportunities for young people and investment where it is needed most. I am excited for the work ahead as funding begins to reach Barry in 2026.”
