Barry Man’s 190‑Mile Charity Walk Reaches Day Two as He Heads Home to the Town That Changed His Life

A Barry man who credits Round Table with helping him through one of the most difficult periods of his life is now two days into a 190‑mile walk back to the town where his journey with the organisation began.

Daniel White, now chairman of Lichfield Round Table and Area 35 Round Table Britain & Ireland, set off from The Railway pub in Billericay on Sunday (16 August), beginning a week‑long trek across England and Wales to raise money for suicide‑prevention charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

Daniel originally joined Barry Round Table before moving away, and says returning to Barry Island on foot will be a symbolic and emotional moment.

“Barry is where my Round Table journey began, so walking back there will make this challenge incredibly personal,” he said in July. “Round Table helped save my life. This walk is my chance to give something back, raise money for CALM and start conversations that might help someone realise they don’t have to struggle alone.”

 

Members of Billericay Round Table joined Daniel for the first ten miles on Sunday, with other Round Table groups planning to walk sections of the route with him throughout the week.

Day two saw him complete a 32‑mile stretch from Ilford to Maidenhead, passing several of London’s landmark tourist spots along the way, whilst also stopping off at the headquarters of CALM.

Daniel said the support he has received reflects the strength of Round Table’s community spirit.

“One of the most incredible things about Round Table is that wherever you go, you’re rarely far from a Tabler,” he said. “People I’ve met have offered to walk miles with me, meet me along the route, help with accommodation, share the fundraiser or simply send a message to keep me going.”

 

Daniel has already raised more than £5,000 for CALM, which provides free, confidential support for anyone struggling with their mental health. As Area 35 Chairman, he has chosen CALM as his charity for the year, promoting the organisation’s Don’t Camo Yourself message — encouraging people not to hide their struggles.

Recent analysis of Office for National Statistics data shows men accounted for around three‑quarters of suicide deaths registered in 2023, a long‑standing trend that Daniel says highlights the importance of CALM’s work.

Daniel is due to arrive at Marco’s Café on Barry Island this Saturday, where members of Barry Round Table — the club that first welcomed him — are planning to greet him at the finish line.

“Whether somebody walks one mile, five miles or an entire day, the company and encouragement will mean a great deal,” he said.
