A popular Barry play area has been closed after a fire caused significant damage to equipment early on Monday morning.

The Salisbury Road play area, known locally as The Dump was shut by the Vale of Glamorgan Council after the incident, which left parts of the playground badly burned and significantly damaged.

The Council said the fire is believed to have been started late on Sunday, 9 August, and is now appealing for information.

A spokesperson said the damage is still being assessed and the site will remain closed while officers determine what repairs are needed.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called to the scene at 1.49 am on Monday, 10 August, following reports of a fire at Fforest Community Park Children’s Playground on Salisbury Road.

A spokesperson for the service said: “Crews and an appliance from Barry attended the incident and extinguished the fire using the hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera. The stop message was received at around 02:12.”

The Council described the incident as disappointing and said the closure is necessary to ensure safety while the extent of the damage is examined.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in or around the play area at the time is urged to report it to South Wales Police using crime reference number 2600260174 via https://www.south-wales.police.uk/contact/af/contact-us-beta/contact-us/report-crime-incident-suspicion/
