Barry has once again achieved Fairtrade Town status, recognising the town’s continued commitment to promoting fair trade and supporting farmers and producers around the world.
The status has been awarded for the 2026-29 period, with Barry having held Fairtrade Town status since 2015.
In recent years, Barry Town Council has promoted Fairtrade through events and activities including Fairtrade Fortnight promotions, coffee mornings, tasting events, quizzes, art competitions, community giveaways and educational activities for families and schools.
The initiatives aim to raise awareness of the benefits of Fairtrade, including fair pay for farmers and workers, ethical and sustainable shopping practices and climate-friendly farming methods.
Fairtrade has also featured at community events organised by the Town Council, including family learning activities and awareness campaigns aimed at introducing Fairtrade principles to residents, particularly young people and families.
Councillor Ian Johnson, Chair of the Globally Responsible Barry Committee, said ”We are proud that Barry has once again achieved Fairtrade Town status, which we have held since 2015.
“This recognises the collective efforts of residents, schools, businesses, community groups and volunteers who continue to support Fairtrade values.
“Fairtrade is about ensuring that producers receive a fair price for their work while promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
“We are delighted that Barry’s commitment to these principles has once again been recognised through this re-certification.”
