The Vale of Glamorgan Council is progressing plans to create a new Wellbeing Hub in Barry as part of changes to the way Adult Day Services are provided.
An update on the proposals was approved at a recent meeting of the Council’s Cabinet, following discussions with people who use the services.
The hub is being developed in partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Swansea Bay Health Board, and would bring health, social care and wellbeing services together at a town centre location.
Existing day services are expected to move to the new facility following its design and redevelopment.
The proposed hub would provide a range of day opportunities and community facilities for adults with care and support needs, with the site located close to public transport and other services.
The Council has already acquired the site using Welsh Government funding, with planning for its development now underway.
Longer-term options for older people's day services and dementia support are also being explored as part of the proposed Western Gateway development in Barry.
Councillor Eddie Williams, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: "We recognise just how important our day services are to those that use them and the responsibility we have to provide the best possible support.
“Modernising these services means they can play a vital role in supporting wellbeing, reducing social isolation and helping people remain connected to their communities.
"We are planning the developments with the people who currently use services, their carers, staff and our health partners to make sure they meet the needs of those individuals.
"The move to Thompson Street offers an exciting opportunity to create a modern, accessible Wellbeing Hub in the centre of Barry, bringing services closer to community facilities and strengthening links between health and social care.
“Our focus remains on ensuring people receive high-quality support that promotes independence, wellbeing and meaningful participation in community life.
“It is also part of wider regeneration work taking place in Barry and will help bring space that was previously empty back into use and provide a significant economic boost to the local area.”
A dedicated Day Services Board, involving service users, carers, staff and Council representatives, has been established as part of the process.
The group will be involved in developing the design of the Thompson Street hub and the future model of support provided there.
The Council will now continue work on the detailed design and plans to submit a business case to the Welsh Government seeking further funding towards fitting out the building.
