Residents and visitors can now report overflowing litter bins by scanning QR codes being rolled out across town centres in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The scheme was initially introduced in Penarth and has since been extended to Barry, Llantwit Major and Cowbridge.

Individual QR codes are being fitted to litter bins, allowing people to use their mobile phones to notify the Vale of Glamorgan Council when one needs emptying.

Each bin has its own unique code, meaning reports can identify the specific bin requiring attention and be sent directly to the Council.

The authority hopes the system will make reporting overflowing bins quicker and help its teams respond to problems more efficiently.

Cllr Mark Wilson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “We want our town centres to be clean, welcoming places for residents, businesses and visitors.

“We know that overflowing litter bins can be frustrating, and this new scheme gives people a quick and easy way to let us know when a bin needs emptying.

“By giving each bin its own QR code, we can receive more precise reports and help our teams identify where attention is needed.

“We’re also continuing to improve recycling facilities across the Vale, and this is another practical step towards keeping our public spaces looking their best.

“We’d encourage residents and visitors to use the QR codes if they spot a full bin.

“If a bin is already overflowing, we’d also ask people to take any litter they have with them until they can find another bin, or take it home for disposal, rather than adding to the overflow. By working together, we can all help keep our towns tidy.”

The QR code rollout forms part of the Council’s wider work to tackle litter and maintain town centres across the Vale of Glamorgan.
