Vale community invited to stand together against domestic abuse at White Ribbon Day candle vigil

Residents, community members and local organisations are invited to gather outside the Civic Offices on Wednesday 25 November at 6 pm to stand in solidarity with survivors of domestic abuse.

Vale of Glamorgan residents are being urged to come together this White Ribbon Day to remember those affected by domestic abuse, show solidarity with survivors and send a clear message that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated in our community.

Organised by Vale Domestic Abuse Services (Vale DAS), the candle vigil will take place outside the Civic Offices at 6pm on Wednesday 25 November, bringing together community leaders, activists, local organisations and allies to reflect on the impact of domestic abuse and the collective responsibility we all share in challenging it.

Last year, Vale DAS supported around 1,000 women and over 200 children in the Vale of Glamorgan. Behind that figure are women whose lives have been affected by abuse, control, fear and harm. Many more may still be living with abuse in silence, unable to seek support or unsure where to turn.

The scale of the issue extends far beyond the Vale. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics estimate that 2.2 million women in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2025. These figures underline the urgent need for communities, institutions and individuals to take action.

White Ribbon Day is an opportunity to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that enable violence against women and girls, and to recognise the vital role men and boys can play in creating a safer society. It also offers an opportunity to show survivors that they are believed, supported and not alone.

The vigil will feature talks from community leaders, activists and allies, with an opportunity for people to come together in reflection and solidarity as the international 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence begins.

Vicky Friis, Chief Executive at Vale DAS, said, “Domestic abuse affects women and families in every community, including our own. While we know that thousands of women across the country experience abuse, the reality is that many are suffering behind closed doors, often in fear and silence.

“This vigil is an opportunity for our community to stand together and show survivors that we see them, we believe them and we stand alongside them. It is also a reminder that preventing abuse is not solely the responsibility of specialist services. We all have a role to play, and men in particular have an important part to play in challenging harmful attitudes, speaking up and helping create a culture where abuse is never excused or ignored.

“We warmly invite everyone in the Vale to join us. By standing together, we can help build a community where women and children are safer, survivors are supported and life can be different.”

The event is open to members of the public, and everyone who believes in a future free from domestic abuse is encouraged to attend.
