A filmmaker originally from Barry is celebrating international recognition after her documentary was screened in Manhattan, New York.
Mariclare Carey-Jones’s short documentary Pierre’s Tale was selected as one of 14 international winners at the 11th Annual New York Dog Film Festival.
The film follows the story of her French Bulldog, Pierre, who has experienced serious health problems, including back issues that required two surgeries. It also highlights the wider health concerns associated with French Bulldog breeding.
“When Pierre first became ill, it was really difficult because his illness was linked to the way he was bred. I felt like I researched the breed and I was aware… what I didn’t know is that they get severe back problems and eye problems… These dogs are suffering because of the choices humans are making to breed them.”
Mariclare, who works as a TV and radio presenter, said making the film felt like a natural way to share Pierre’s story.
"Because of the work I do… it seemed the natural thing to pick up my phone and film the process… One of the best things about being a journalist is that you can share people’s stories, and great things happen when a story is shared.”
The documentary aims to give a voice to dogs and raise awareness of the health issues they can face. Pierre’s Tale has also received recognition at other international festivals, winning Best Documentary Short at the Kookai International Film Festival in India in May and Best Activist Message at the International Animal & Environmental Film Festival in Mexico City last December.
The festival travels to cinemas across the United States, with 10% of ticket sales donated to local animal charities.
UK audiences can watch Pierre’s Tale on Mariclare’s YouTube channel, through Welsh rescue charity Hope Rescue’s YouTube channel. Pierre’s Tale will next be shown at Everyman Cinemas this December as part of an event by Hope Rescue.
