Pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Iolo Morganwg have left their mark on their new school at a steel signing event.

The event celebrated the completion of the new school’s steel frame and marked a key milestone for the project, near Cowbridge being delivered for the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Over 30 Year 6 pupils and staff from the existing school visited the site where they signed their names and added painted handprints to the frame, creating a permanent connection between the pupils and their future school.

The modern, purpose-built school will help to significantly expand Welsh-medium educational provision in the area, doubling the current pupil capacity from 210 to 420 places.

It will feature flexible and accessible learning spaces designed to meet the needs of pupils, as well as provide a valuable resource for the Cowbridge and the surrounding communities.

Throughout construction, pupils have taken part in a range of social value activities and engagement activities designed to offer an insight into the construction process, support learning beyond the classroom, and involve them in this significant investment in their school community.

Ian Rees, regional director for Kier Construction Western & Wales, said:

“Engaging with the pupils at Ysgol Gymraeg Iolo Morganwg has been a priority for us from the outset, and we have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming them to the site. “The steel signing event provided another fantastic opportunity to celebrate an important milestone with them and, hopefully, inspire some of the pupils to consider a career in construction.”

Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Education, the Arts and the Welsh Language, said:

“It was wonderful to see pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Iolo Morganwg playing such a memorable part in the development of their new school. This is an exciting milestone for the project, which will significantly expand Welsh-medium education provision in the Vale and provide a modern and inspiring learning environment for future generations.

“Giving pupils the opportunity to visit the site, learn about the construction process and leave their own mark on the building helps create a real sense of connection with their new school

“We’d like to thank Kier for their continued work on this project and for the time and effort they have invested in engaging pupils through meaningful educational activities throughout the construction process.”
