Cllr Dennis Clarke has been elected as the new Mayor of Barry.
The Plaid Cymru councillor succeeds Labour's Catherine Iannucci-Williams, who has held the role for the past twelve months.
Barry Town Council agreed unanminously on Cllr Clalrke's nomination the role at their annual general meeting on Monday night, followed by a traditional mayor-making ceremony at the Victoria Park Community Centre.
Cllr Clarke, who represents the Buttrills ward, was born in Barry and attended Colcot and High Street schools before moving onto the town's boys' grammar school.
He graduated from the University of Reading with a BSc (Hons) after studying maths and statistics in 1971, before being admitted to the Roll of Solicitors.
He was first elected to the town council in 2019, and last year, he was Plaid Cymru's candidate in the Police and Crime Commissioner election for South Wales, finishing third.
Cllr Clarke is also a governor of Cadoxton Primary School and a trustee of Advocacy Matters in Wales. His two nominated charities for his term in office are Mind in the Vale and the countryside access group Valeways.
Following his investiture, the new Mayor said: "I am deeply honoured to be nominated for this role, with the unanimous support of the council. It is a position of great importance for Barry, and I am committed to representing our town with respect and dedication throughout my term."
"My mayoress - my wife of 52 years, Janet - and I plan to attend as many community events as possible, and we look forward to engaging in meaningful conversations with many residents."
His deputy will be the youngest in Barry's history - Cllr Ewan Goodjohn, who was elected to Vale Council as a Cadoc ward member for Labour in 2022.
Cllr Goodjohn, who was previously a member of the Vale Youth Council, holds a qualification in accountancy, and is currently studying business and economics. He says he is committed to the environment and improvements for the local community.
