The power increase will see improved coverage for services like Bro Radio across Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and Caerphilly.
Viamux, the UK’s small-scale DAB solutions specialist, has successfully delivered power increases for three small-scale multiplex licensees - Cardiff from round one and Liverpool, and Warrington, Widnes & Runcorn from round two.
The Cardiff multiplex, which covers the capital city of Wales, as well as the Eastern Vale of Glamorgan and Caerphilly, has a combined population of over half a million listeners.
Following the submission of a detailed coverage improvement request to Ofcom, Cardiff DAB was allowed to double the power at each of its three transmission sites.
The Vale's local radio station, Bro Radio launched on the Cardiff SSDAB multiplex in June 2023, following financial support from local solicitors firm CJCH Solicitors.
Nathan Spackman from Bro Radio welcomed the news. “We’re thrilled that Cardiff DAB has been able to increase the output of their transmitters and improve DAB coverage across the area. Launching on DAB in May 2023 allowed us to reach new audiences across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, whilst bringing existing listeners over to DAB+."
"The improved coverage will help us to continue to grow our community service, increase revenue and reach even more listeners.”
The increase in power improves coverage across the region for Bro Radio, fellow community services GTFM, Radio Cardiff and Rookwood Sound, along with commercial services from AspenWaite Radio, Danceland, Gaydio, News Radio UK, Radio Wigwam, Voice of Islam and XL: UK Radio.
Viamux continues to work with licensees across the UK on improving their coverage requirements.
