A prolific thief from Barry has been banned from shops in the Holton Road and Waterfront areas.
Philip Tamlin admitted five thefts, including three from the Morrisons supermarket on Penny Way and two from the Co-op and One Stop stores.
Last month, the 49-year-old served a two-week jail sentence and was ordered to pay compensation.
Cardiff magistrates heard Tamlin regularly entered shops with no intention to buy anything - and police said he became confrontational and aggressive when being challenged.
He was given a two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO), which the court heard was necessary to prevent crime and to protect the local community, workers and the public from continuing distress, disruption and potential harm.
As part of the CBO, he is banned from the Waterfront Retail Park at Heol Ceiniog and cannot enter Holton Road unless he has a pre-arranged appointment with a GP or a support agency.
He cannot enter any retail premises in Barry unless he has a means to pay for items and must leave when asked to do so.
Tamlin was also banned from any council building unless there was a pre-arranged appointment and could not approach anyone in a public place in an abusive or threatening manner.
PC Adrian Mascat, an anti-social behaviour co-ordinator at South Wales Police, said: "We work closely with retailers and businesses to protect them from crime and anti-social committed by individuals like Philip Tamlin."
"Shoplifting can have a devastating impact on shopworkers and retailers."
South Wales Police said it had adopted a new wider approach to tackling shoplifting in Cardiff and the Vale in response to a rise in retail theft.
Officers have been sharing intelligence with local retailers as well as arresting prolific offenders and those who profit from such crimes in an effort to improve trust and confidence among the region's business community.
