Emergency services dealt with 23 incidents on the Vale's coastline during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

According to Barry Coastguard, there were 19 incidents involving children going missing on Whitmore Bay at Barry Island - all of which ended in a 'positive' outcome'.

Three people were taken unwell while two more beachgoers needed medical checks after ingesting water and one person was treated after falling near Breaksea Drive.

And in Southerndown, two swimmers were rescued after they were cut off by the tide beneath the cliffs near Southerndown on Monday evening.

Two RNLI lifeboats from Porthcawl were tasked to the area at around 7.15pm, along with coastguard teams from Llantwit Major and Barry.

The D-class lifeboat tried to veer down backwards on its anchor line to retrieve the stranded pair, but a large swell with big waves made it too dangerous.

The Coastguard helicopter from St Athan was called out to winch the swimmers to safety, before they were taken to a nearby landing site where they met by the mobile coastguard teams.

During the rescue, the Coastguard alerted the Atlantic 85 lifeboat to a further 999 call about two swimmers in difficulty at Southerndown - but a search of the area was stood down when it was established they were the same pair who were cut off.
