A youth who slashed a man's face with a machete in Barry has been sent to a young offenders institute for six years.
WARNING: Some viewers may find the CCTV footage in this article distressing.
Daniel Harris, also known as Rambo, attacked a man in his 30s on Ramsey Road in Gibbonsdown last December.
The 18 year-old from Brynna, near Llanharan, denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent, but he was found guilty by a jury last month.
Cardiff Crown Court heard the victim initially approached Harris, believing him to be someone else, when the defendant produced a machete that was hidden in his trousers and started attacking him.
CCTV footage showed the man trying to run away but he was followed by Harris, who continued to attack his victim after he fell over, before leaving the scene.
The jury heard the victim needed over 20 stitches for a laceration to his face, suffered a cut to his right shoulder and suffered a ruptured achilles tendon, alongside tendon and nerve damage.
Following sentencing, DI Phillip Marchant of South Wales Police, said: “Tackling crime involving weapons such as machetes and knives is a priority for South Wales Police, and we take incidents like this extremely seriously. There is no place for those who carry knives in our community."
"I’m pleased to see this sentence and hope it gives Harris – who is known to others as Rambo – some time to reflect on his choice to carry a weapon. While this incident was extremely traumatising to the victim, the outcome could have been significantly worse."
Harris was also given a ten-year restraining order, preventing him from contacting his victim.
