Barry RFC Youth were left frustrated after their match against Tylorstown was abandoned after 25 minutes, when a bonus point victory looked to be on the cards.
The Barry RFC Youth fixture against Tylorstown was abandoned after 25 minutes, with Barry having 10 points on the board, in the Cardiff Rugby Division 2.
Barry RFC later issued a statement, saying the incident “is in the process of being formally reported to the WRU, and will be handled in line with their disciplinary procedures. As such, it would be inappropriate for the club to comment further.”
Prior to the abandonment the Bombers scored two tries as they looked to cement their place at the top of the league in their last game of the season.
Tylorstown initially kicked to the corner in order to put pressure on the home team, but
a solid scrum and good lineout work from captain Rhys Berhens, Mav Jennings and Jacob Maggs in particular saw Barry comfortably winning the set piece and clearing their lines.
After 15 minutes full back Isaac Thomas countered from his own half, starting a move which saw the ball worked through the hands of front rowers Tom Forrester and Berhens to put right wing Charlie Hutton away. He outpaced the defence and gathered his kick ahead to open the scoring.
Barry’s confidence was up, they were starting to play, and soon struck again, the forwards providing decent ball for half backs Morgan Beasley and Cam Hughes to put Thomas into space. He offloaded to supporting centre Lloyd Beer for Barry’s second. Hughes was again agonisingly close with the conversion attempt.
Barry head coach Peter O’Sullivan said he and his fellow coaches were happy with the way the team started the game, “possibly the best we’ve started all season”, but were left frustrated by having the match abandoned when another bonus point victory looked to be on the cards.
