Dinas Powys took a big step towards safety with this narrow victory. With one game to play Dinas are on 27 points.
Canton, currently in the relegation zone with already doomed Gilfach Goch, are 11 points behind with three matches left.
This was a must-win game, and Cilfynydd, who have held their own against top sides in the division, opened strongly with a try after five minutes. Dinas didn’t panic, knowing that against a big pack and heavy players carrying hard, speed and moving the ball was the recipe for opening up the home side.
A few late withdrawals and a small bench didn’t worry Dinas, who quickly settled, Caelan Hurley launching a high kick which the fullback failed to gather, and Owen Buckley pounced on the favourable bounce to score. Hurley converted. More seesaw exchanges followed, Dinas turning round 14-10 up after Jac Huggins crashed over, Hurley converting.
More speed with the ball took its toll on the Cylfynydd pack on a hot sunny day, and Dinas hit again, Hurley scoring out wide and adding the extras. Cilfynydd closed the gap to 21-17 as both sides chased the points.
Dinas landed two penalties to give them a breathing space, but Cilfynydd to hit back to make it 27-24. Dinas battered the home side’s runners to force mistakes, and with clock in the red turned the ball over and kicked off the pitch.
“There were big games for Buckley , Toby Price standing in at hooker, big carries from Iwan Davies and Andrew Schuznic, and Hurley having his best game in his first season at Dinas with 12 points,” said head coach John Dimond.
The final match for Dinas is at Ferndale on April 11. “We aim to finish on a high,” said Dimond, “to wrap up a great second half to this season.”
