Ingle named in Women's Euros squad

Sophie Ingle has been named in the Wales squad for their historic Women's Euros debut in Switzerland next month.

The former captain from Llandough will be one of four centurions in Rhian Wilkinson's 23-player squad for their first ever appearance at a major tournament.

It marks not only a huge boost for Wales, but also a key personal victory for Ingle, who missed last season after undergoing surgery for an ACL injury.

The 33 year-old, who is leaving Chelsea this summer, has been out of action since last September, when she was injured during a pre-season friendly against Feyenoord.

Ingle missed Wales' play-off triumph against the Republic of Ireland and their last Women's Nations League campaign, which ended in relegation from the top tier.

But even while sidelined, the defender has played some part in the Wales squad - and earlier this month, she resumed training during their last camp, when manager Rhian Wilkinson remained hesitant about Ingle's inclusion in the Euros squad.

"Any injury is a lonely place to be...and one of the big gains is not just being back on the field with the ball, but being back with your teammates", said Wilkinson last month.

"She's done that with her club and equally at country...it's just one of these milestones that are such a boost and I know you can see it in her that this is a big moment."

Ingle took to Instagram following the announcement, saying she was "honoured, excited and so proud".

She said the last eight-and-a-half months "is for moments like this", adding: "I thank and love everyone who has helped me through this rehab journey! Wales, let’s go and have the best summer ever."

Ingle's successor as captain, Angharad James, will again lead Wales into the tournament, with all-time goalscorer Jess Fishlock expected to play a starring role, after returning to Seattle Reign from injury last month.

The influential midfielder scored a stunning second-half reply in their 4-1 defeat to Italy in Swansea, which marked the end of a winless Nations League campaign in the run up to the Euros.

Likewise, Rhiannon Roberts and Olivia Clark have both recovered from recent injury scares with Real Betis and Leicester City to make the cut.

But there's disappointment for Barry's Soffia Kelly.

Despite earning praise from Wilkinson, the uncapped Aston Villa goalkeeper has been left out of the squad having been called up for their last two Women's Nations League games.

Kelly was also named Young Person of the Year at the Bro Radio Communiy Awards, after signing her first professional contract at Villa Park in March.

Other notable absentees include Sunderland midfielder Mary McAteer and young Manchester United striker Mared Griffiths.

The likes of Laura O'Sullivan Jones, Mayze Davies and Megan Wynne had already been ruled out of the tournament due to long-term ACL injuries.

The FAW says more than 2,000 Welsh fans will make up the Red Wall at all three of Wales' group games, starting on Saturday 5th July in Lucerne, when they face the Netherlands, who won the tournament in 2017.

Wilkinson's squad travel to St. Gallen to France four days later before taking on defending champions England on Sunday 13th July.

The formal squad announcement was made ahead of a press conference at the summit of Yr Wyddfa on Thursday as part of a day of media activity, which includes a football festival at CPD Talysarn and a Gwyl Cymru Q&A session at Neuadd Ogwen in Bethesda.

The Wales camp sets off from Cardiff Airport on Sunday for a week-long training camp in the Algarve, before moving onto their Swiss team base at Weinfelden in the canton of Thurgau.
