A Barry family has received a Welsh Athletics lifetime service award on behalf of a former local schoolteacher, four decades after his death.
The Meritorious Award was presented in memory of Denys Gumbley, a maths teacher who spent decades organising schools cross‑country and athletics events across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. His nomination was submitted by former colleague Peter Morris, who detailed more than 15 years of voluntary service to the sport.
Gumbley, who died in the mid‑1980s, was a volunteer at the 1958 Empire Games and later served as fixtures secretary for schools athletics meetings until his retirement in 1984/85. He also kept meticulous records of race results and timings, many of which now form part of Wales’s athletics archive.
Two Welsh schools' athletics awards continue to bear his name: the Denys Gumbley Shield for pupils in Cardiff and the Vale, and the Denys Gumbley Award, presented annually by the Welsh Schools Athletic Association.
Members of Gumbley’s family, who still live in Barry, attended the presentation alongside Cllr Ian Johnson, his mother Janet, Les Croupiers Running Club representative Mick McGeoch and nominator Peter Morris.
Cllr Johnson said the recognition came as an unexpected but meaningful tribute.
“It was a great surprise to find that my grandfather had been nominated for this Welsh Athletics Award, without our knowledge as a family,” he said.
“It was heart‑warming to meet up with his friends and colleagues many decades after his death and chat about his contribution to school cross‑country locally and across Wales. We really appreciate them taking the time to submit this application so many years after Denys’s death.”
