Cadoxton Primary School has been praised by Estyn inspectors, who say the Barry school is providing “deep, purposeful, memorable and fun” learning experiences for local children.
The inspection, carried out recently, highlights the school’s strong community ethos, ambitious teaching and the high level of care shown to pupils and families across Cadoxton and the wider Barry area.
Inspectors noted that Cadoxton Primary’s leadership team has a clear vision rooted in supporting local families and strengthening community ties. The school was commended for creating a warm, safe and nurturing environment where pupils feel valued and ready to learn.
Pupils were described as behaving “very well” and showing consistently positive attitudes, while staff were praised for delivering an engaging curriculum that connects learning to real life in Barry and modern Wales.
The report also highlights strong progress in literacy, reading and numeracy, with pupils benefiting from high‑quality teaching and meaningful learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
Estyn’s report draws particular attention to the school’s inquiry‑based curriculum, which is shaped around pupils’ interests and local experiences. Inspectors wrote, “Teachers work with pupils to construct well‑planned inquiries that are aspirational, exciting and challenge pupils, and are relevant to their life experiences and the diversity of modern Wales.”
Outdoor learning, enrichment activities and residential trips all play a key role in the rhythm of the school year, helping pupils build confidence and curiosity.
The school’s “Breaking Barriers” team was also singled out for praise. This group of staff meets weekly to identify pupils who may need extra support—whether academically, emotionally or due to wider family circumstances. Inspectors said the team’s work is having a “very positive” impact on pupil wellbeing and attendance.
Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Cabinet Member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Cadoxton Primary School and a testament to the commitment of everyone involved in the school community. The report highlights the excellent care that pupils receive and the innovative approach the school takes to delivering learning that is ambitious, inclusive and enjoyable. Congratulations to all staff, pupils and governors on this well-deserved recognition.”
Cadoxton Primary School Headteacher Janet Hayward said: “We are very proud of this incredibly positive inspection report, which reflects the dedication and hard work over many years of our children, staff, governors and wider school community. It is especially pleasing to receive recognition through two “spotlights”; one for the way we have designed and refined our authentic curriculum, which effectively raises standards in all areas of learning. The second, for the way we work relentlessly and holistically as a whole school community to break barriers that children may have to learning and thriving. The report is a fantastic endorsement of the Cadoxton way.”
