Cardiff Airport is working with Cardiff Metropolitan University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on an aviation management degree aimed at giving students experience of working in an airport environment.
Students on the BA (Hons) Aviation Management course take part in sessions across different departments at the airport, including operations, safety and security, customer experience and commercial work.
The course was launched in 2022 and was developed by Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff Airport and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Some students have gone on to work at Cardiff Airport during or after their studies.
Cardiff Metropolitan University delivers the programme and draws on operational input from Cardiff Airport and international academic support from Embry-Riddle.
The first group of students graduated last year, and another cohort is due to complete the course this summer. The Royal Aeronautical Society has also recognised the course.
The degree covers airport and airline operations, aviation safety and security, and strategic management. It is designed for students interested in careers in airports, airlines and the wider aviation sector.
The partnership is intended to give students a route into the aviation industry while also supporting skills development in the sector in Wales.
Third-year student of the course, Ethan George, spoke about his time at Cardiff Airport as part of his work experience placement. He said: “Being able to immerse myself in the day-to-day operations at Cardiff Airport has given me a much deeper understanding of what goes on behind the scenes. From observing airfield operations to shadowing fire and rescue services and terminal management, I’ve developed a well-rounded view of how an airport functions on a practical level.”
