South Wales Police have seized an e‑bike capable of reaching more than 60mph after it was ridden through Llantwit Major town centre, as part of a wider crackdown on illegal and anti‑social bike use across the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff.
Officers from the Llantwit Major Neighbourhood Policing Team stopped a 45‑year‑old local man and found the bike was far more powerful than permitted under UK e‑bike regulations. The rider was advised on the law and agreed to surrender the bike for destruction.
The operation forms part of Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action, with teams across the region targeting dangerous riding, uninsured vehicles and anti‑social behaviour linked to e‑bikes and e‑scooters.
Elsewhere, in Ely, plain‑clothed officers seized a knuckle duster and a pit bike in Treseder Way. A 33‑year‑old man from Newport has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, driving without a valid licence and driving without insurance. A Surron and an illegally adapted bike were also seized in Trelai Park.
Inspector Tim Ursell said unlawful use of e‑bikes and e‑scooters continues to pose a risk to communities “Unlawful use of e-bikes and e-scooters is not only illegal but also puts pedestrians and road users at serious risk,” he said. “The impact of anti-social e-bike riders on the communities is regularly raised as a concern. We urge the public to please understand the law and make safe, legal choices.”
Neighbourhood Policing Week highlights the work of local officers, PCSOs and volunteers who focus on community safety, visibility and tackling persistent issues raised by residents.
