Llansannor and Llanharry Church in Wales Primary School has been praised for its calm, inclusive atmosphere and strong leadership following its latest Estyn inspection.
Inspectors highlighted the school’s “welcoming and inclusive” environment, noting that pupils are given a strong voice and that their views are listened to and acted upon. The report also commended the clear vision set by the headteacher and the school’s focus on meeting the well-being and learning needs of every child.
According to Estyn, pupils benefit from an engaging curriculum that offers real‑life learning experiences designed to motivate them and support their progress. Inspectors found that pupils develop their literacy, numeracy and digital skills effectively and make good progress in applying them across different areas of learning.
In their feedback, inspectors wrote: **“Pupils are particularly effective at taking ownership of their learning and this develops successfully as they move through the school. Younger pupils show curiosity and demonstrate resilience when faced with challenges.
“Older pupils often set their own success criteria and use a range of strategies to research, problem-solve, and reflect on their progress. They make good use of feedback to improve their work, showing initiative in extending their knowledge beyond the classroom.”**
The report also praised the school’s curriculum design, noting: **“Teachers have developed a holistic curriculum that is engaging, inspiring and enables pupils to make sense of the world. Pupils develop skills progressively through imaginative and stimulating first-hand learning experiences. There are good opportunities for pupils to take responsibility for their learning. Teachers review the curriculum regularly, and this flexibility ensures that it remains relevant and responsive to pupils’ needs.
“Staff have thoughtfully created a learning environment that enriches pupils’ learning and supports them to develop independence. They use the extensive outdoor areas, including the school’s allotment well to enhance learning experiences across the curriculum.”**
Inspectors also highlighted the strong support for pupils with additional learning needs, positive relationships between staff and pupils, and the exemplary behaviour and attitudes seen across the school.
Cllr Rhiannon Birch, Cabinet Member for Education, Arts and the Welsh Language, said: "The inspection findings showcase many of the qualities that make Llansannor and Llanharry such a strong and supportive school community. From its nurturing ethos and strong sense of inclusion to its success in developing independent, motivated learners, the report highlights a school that is helping pupils flourish both academically and personally. The whole school community can take great pride in this achievement and in the positive learning environment they have created together."
Headteacher Stephanie Davies said the outcome reflects the dedication of the whole school community. “We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of our recent Estyn inspection. This report is a reflection of the dedication, passion and teamwork of our entire school community – our staff, pupils, governors and families.
“The positive attitudes, resilience and enthusiasm our pupils demonstrate each day make us incredibly proud. We are especially pleased that Estyn recognised the strength of pupil voice in our school and the confidence and independence with which our learners take ownership of their learning.
“While we are proud of this achievement, we remain committed to ongoing improvement and ensuring that every pupil continues to flourish both academically and personally.”
Estyn made one recommendation for further improvement: to continue developing pupils’ confidence in using the Welsh language in informal situations.
