A local group has hosted a hustings focused on nature and the environment.
The event drew a full room in Barry last week, as residents questioned Senedd election candidates on how they would tackle pressures on green space and wildlife.
The event was organised by Barry Action for Nature and was chaired by Brian Royson Mayne, Vice Chair of the group. Candidates from across the political spectrum attended, excluding representatives from Reform UK Wales, who were invited but did not attend.
Barry Action for Nature is a community-based environmental group that campaigns for local wildlife and better habitats in Barry, and runs volunteer activities and awareness-raising projects to encourage practical action for nature.
Questions from the floor covered fly-tipping, improving biodiversity, tree planting, and the environmental impacts of housing development and planning decisions. Attendees pressed candidates for practical commitments, including stronger enforcement where waste is dumped illegally and a clearer approach to protecting and enhancing habitats as new developments are considered.
Organisers said the hustings aimed to give the community a direct voice so local environmental concerns can be heard clearly and decision-makers can be held to account.
Chairperson Robert Curtis said: “Barry Action for Nature is about turning concern into action. We have held three nature hustings before, and by bringing candidates and residents together again we’re making sure local wildlife and habitats are on the agenda—and that promises made in an election year are followed through.” Residents interested in future events and local nature initiatives are encouraged to follow Barry Action for Nature for updates.
