A man has died after he was rescued from the water off Penarth Pier.
The RNLI sent out its D-class lifeboat at around 4.30pm on Monday afternoon following multiple 999 calls to the Coastguard from the public.
The casualty was supported by three swimmers who had been equpped with flotation buoys.
The coastguard helicopter from St Athan and the Wales Air Ambulance also attended the scene along with police, local coastguards and paramedics, as part of a major operation co-ordinated by the HM Coastguard centre at Milford Haven.
South Wales Police later confirmed the man had later died after he was taken by ambulance to hospital.
A spokesperson said: "The man’s next of kin has been informed. There are no suspicious circumstances."
A spokesperson for Penarth RNLI thanked "members of the public who swiftly called 999, and the three well-equipped coastal swimmers whose actions supported the rescue of the individual."
They added: "If you see someone in difficulty in or near water, please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
