Leading end-of-life charity Marie Curie is celebrating after raising thousands to help support dying people in Penarth at its Garden Fayre, which returned by popular demand after being such a great success last year.
Marie Curie, which provides care and support for people living with any illness they are likely to die from, and those close to them, held the fundraiser at its Cardiff and the Vale Hospice in Penarth last week – raising more than £4,000.
Volunteers, visitors, hospice patients and staff all joined to visit a variety of stalls, take part in games and listen to Ukulele Nights and The Harmony Brothers who performed in the band stand of Windsor Gardens.
There was face painting, ice cream from Daisy & Belle and the opportunity to speak with Compassionate Penarth. There was plenty to keep the children entertained, with hook-a-duck and a range of soft toy stalls, making it a perfect family day out.
The hospice’s Garden Café was also open throughout the day serving a selection of delicious food and drink, alongside freshly prepared burgers from the BBQ.
Marie Curie Nurses and healthcare professionals can provide expert hospice care to people in their own home and at its hospice on Bridgeman Road in the town.
Marie Curie also has a free Information and Support service, offering practical and emotional support on everything from symptom management and day-to-day care to financial information and bereavement support over the phone and online.
Hannah Warner-Holt, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Cardiff and the Vale said: “We are delighted to have brought so many people together in Penarth at our hospice to raise vital funds for our services. A huge thank you to our volunteers and to all organisations and performers for helping make the day the success it was."
“Almost one in three people still don’t get the support they need at the end of life. By fundraising and hosting events like this, you can help change that and bring Marie Curie’s expert end of life care to more people. Every pound raised helps the charity to provide emotional and practical support to people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones at the most difficult times.”
The charity is dependent on fundraising and public donations and is always encouraging people to host their own fundraisers – this summer asking people to host a golf day to help raise funds.
“Whether you’re a golfing pro, new to the sport or just keen to try something fun, we have everything you need to swing into action and help raise funds for an excellent cause this summer.” added Hannah.
